Cruise & Self-Drive
Getting to Whittier is half the fun! Grab your camera and leave early to see everything. The Seward Highway follows Turnagain Arm, dotted with pull-outs where you can stop and enjoy views of the unique mudflats, waterfalls, and possible sightings of Beluga whales, bald eagles, or Dall sheep.
Depart the Seward Highway near milepost 79 and follow the Portage Glacier Road to Whittier. Reserve extra time for road construction delays and don’t be late for the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel operating on a strict schedule providing alternating one-way traffic service to Whittier. Arrive early or stay after the cruise to explore this small Alaskan town by the sea with just over 200 residents.
